Accredited Mental Health Social Worker
I am a Mental Health Social Worker (Clinical), and I primarily use a ‘Narrative’ approach to my therapy. That said, I am client-centred and use therapies such as CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for greater insight and understanding in relationship with the links between our thoughts/attitudes, feelings and behaviours.
In addition, I use ‘Emotional Freedom Techniques’ as an extremely effective treatment for dealing with many mental health issues and acute and/or chronic trauma.
Another excellent therapeutic intervention I have found is the ‘HeartMath’ techniques’ . These techniques are well researched and work really well as highly effective Emotional ‘Refocusing’ and Emotional ‘Restructuring’ techniques for Emotional Regulation.
A good example of the use of Cognitive Behavioural therapies that I use are ‘Resilience training’ for adults and couples. Research tells us that resilience training reduces the depleting effects of Depression, Anxiety and Stress. Furthermore, resilience training can be effective in building self-esteem levels at all ages and stages of our lives.
Other useful techniques that I draw on in my practice are EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping tool).
EFT is an evidenced-based therapeutic modality that combines elements of exposure, cognitive therapy and somatic stimulation of acupressure points on the face and body for physical and emotional regulation.
More recently, I have discovered ‘HeartMath’ which is a biofeedback technology system using Heart Rate Variability to trace heart-coherence with various systems of the body, including but not limited to, the Hormonal system and the Neurological system for ’emotional’ regulation and overall health and wellness.
The heart communicates with the brain and body in four ways:
If we use heart-focused breathing techniques for coherence between multiple systems in the body, by practicing and maintaining our heart-coherence breathing techniques, we can ensure harmonious benefits within our bodies, minds, hearts, souls, spirits and relationships. We do this by refocusing and restructuring our inner world of thoughts on ‘renewing’ thoughts such as appreciation and compassion and the like. More amazing is the fact that in the scientific literature it confirms that, the hormonal system releases DHEA called the ‘Vitality’ hormone into our systems and once released into our system, has the capacity to repair and renew our bodies at the cellular level – a thought worthy of your attention.

Similarly, just as an ‘elite’ athlete trains daily to maintain health, fitness and overall well-being, HeartMath’s heart-focused breathing techniques are the ‘Key’ to such results from within and out towards others.
The research and the science behind HeartMath shows us that by using the methods of heart-focused breathing and the associated techniques, we can mitigate the harm that Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Trauma, Insomnia and other depleting emotions and attitudes can have on our bodies and our relationships.
Like anything that is worth doing well, it takes practice to gain the results that can, and does, transform our lives – if we put the effort in.
Thus, unfolding the path for becoming heart-empowered individuals who choose the way of love, which they demonstrate through compassionate care for themselves and to others.
Therefore, as the follow quote from the founder of ‘HeartMath’ Institute states;
